CE1 International Section students have been learning about the history of Mother’s Day in America and comparing it with other traditions in various countries. Mother’s Day in America is celebrated the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day was originally started by Ann Reeves Jarvis who formed a committee to help mothers who lost their sons in the Civil War. This committee was first called “Mothers’ Friendship Day”. After Ann’s death, her daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis continued the tradition where it finally started to become recognized nationally. Finally, in 1914, congress passed a law to officially recognize the day as “Mother’s Day”. For Mother’s Day, students made Mother’s day cards and coupon books to present to their mothers.
