CE1 students in SI started learning about Theodore Roosevelt, the 26 th U.S. president. Students learned that Theodore Roosevelt got the name “Teddy” because he refused to shoot a bear on a hunting expedition. As a result, the teddy bear was invented and named after him. They also learned what Teddy was like as a child. Teddy was known for his fascination with animals and kept a wide variety of pets throughout his life. These pets included a small bear, lizard, guinea pigs, a pig, badger, blue macaw, hen, a one-legged rooster, hyena, barn owl, and a pony just to name a few. He was most famous for being a conservationist and dramatically expanding the national parks and forests during his presidency.
