On Thursday, 21st of April 2022, Life School commemorated Kartini Day as a form of our respect for Kartini’s struggle who fought for the rights of Indonesian women to get the same rights as men to be able to get the highest possible school education on that time. This event conducted by the Indonesia Language Teachers; Ibu Dyah and Bapak Farhandi.
Let’s go back to the history of Raden Ajeng Kartini. She was born on April 21, 1879 and had to face the Javanese tradition of that time where a 13 years old woman had to do seclusion to prepare to be a housewife for a man. Since then, she had lost all her dreams of achieving higher education to be able to show the world that Indonesian women are educated women and have the same academic abilities as European women. But in her downturn, Kartini still had the spirit to be able to make her goals come true. She is a smart woman. She has very good Dutch language skills, so many Dutch reading books have opened her horizons about the equal position of women and men in life, resulting in the emancipation of women. This is what broadened Kartini’s horizons because her hobbies are reading and writing. In that way, she fights for women’s equality in education. During that time of seclusion, she read and wrote a lot about the importance of a woman getting an education so that later it could have an impact on the integrity of a country and nation.
Taking from her spirit in fighting the equality for Indonesian women in education, all Life School primary students, teachers, principals trying to celebrate the Kartini Day more life by showing several activities, such as:
1. Started by singing ‘Indonesia Raya’ song as the anthem of Indonesian
2. Perform mini drama which presented by the CM2 students
3. Playing a drama puppet which presented by the CM1 students
4. Reading some poems about Kartini’s struggle which presented by the CM1 students
5. Sing ‘Indonesia Raya’ song as the anthem of Indonesian
6. A quiz game for students to know their knowledge about ‘Who is Raden Ajeng Kartini’

This event went well and gave students a lot of knowledge to get closer to Kartini’s spirit which has had a good impact on Indonesian women as we can see now and also in the future. As one of a Kartini’s book “Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang” or “From the Darkness to the Light” or “Door Duisternis Tot Licht”.
