February is Black History month in the United States. To commemorate this month, both CE1 and CE2 classes are studying literature and historical figures of the African American community.
CE1 has started studying the life of Ruby Bridges. On November 14, 1960, at the age of six, Ruby became the very first African American child to attend the all-
white public William Frantz Elementary School in Alabama. Ruby and her mother were escorted by federal marshals to the school every day because of protests from angry mobs. Students studied her character traits. One of the traits that was
discussed was her persistence to continue going to school despite the many obstacles she faced.
This week, CE2 has been reading the book New Shoes by Susan Lynn Meyer. This story tells about a little girl who wanted to buy new shoes, but at the time, the shop owner wouldn’t let African American people try on shoes. After she bought the shoes, she realized that they didn’t fit. She eventually made her own place where other little African American children could try on shoes before buying
them. After studying the story, we went over the story elements where students made a flip book to show what the story elements were for this book.
